I had a little bit of cake left over from the Ronald McDonald House cake and decided to ice them and cover them with fondant. These made for a great, portable snack, (kind of like a cupcake) so I wrapped them up, put them in a baggy and placed them on our mailbox for the mail man.
He was really excited to see them! I hope he enjoyed them!
There’s a new Ronald McDonald House about 5 minutes away from where I live. The volunteers there are really great people, and I wanted to make them a custom cake to show some support for what they do.
The entire house is made out of cake, and the design on the front was made from fondant and gum paste. I tried to keep the feel of the Ronald McDonald House logo design – how the outline of the house is hand drawn and not perfectly straight – and modeled my lines in that same form. Each side of the house has a plaque that has a part of their slogan on it.
When I took it to them, they were kind of speechless. I really don’t think they expected it and were taken by surprise. About a week later I got a couple thank you cards in the mail from some of the volunteers.
I am so glad they enjoyed it!
After my first tiered cake, I wanted to make another custom cake, so I made this fire truck cake for the fire station up the street from where I live. I was really excited to make it because it was my first cake vehicle!
When I took it to the firemen, they were really excited about it. The first reaction I got was “you made this?!?”, followed up with “and this is cake?!?”. It was complete with a ladder, hose, ax and, of course, a dalmatian dog. I really got to experiment with structure and stability with this cake. It took some good planning and execution to make the cake stand up on the wheels.
I can’t wait to make another vehicle out of cake!
Up to this point I had been focusing more on making custom cakes to understand their structure, but felt I needed to make a more traditional cake so that I had some practice under the belt with that as well. So I made this cake, which was the first tiered cake I had ever made.
I needed to practice making circles and ovals, which were pretty hard with the limited tools I had, so I thought I would make a simple tiered cake and pipe them all over it. It was a little rough in the beginning, but I got a lot better by the end. This cake also ended up at T3 in Austin where it was thoroughly enjoyed!
I made this custom cake from a picture that was hanging on the wall at my boyfriend’s work (T3 in Austin). The entire tank was made out of cake! The only part of the cake that wasn’t edible was the handle at the top. The cake had layers of chocolate and vanilla cake with chocolate frosting.
The employees at T3 were really excited about it, and I think they were mostly excited about eating it! They are such a great group of cake testers, very supportive of me, and they give me great feedback to help me continually improve my cakes. Thanks T3!
Custom cake numero three, the Pill Bottle Cake! I took this cake to where I used to work, which was a doctor’s office (hence the theme of the cake). The pill bottle lid was vanilla cake with vanilla frosting, the pill bottle itself was chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, and the pills were made out of fondant. This was such a fun cake to make! I really like the way it turned out, and so did all of my old co-workers.
This couch cake was only the second custom cake that I had ever made. The entire couch was made out of cake, and I shaped it and covered it with fondant. When I was done with it, I took it to the front office of the apartments where I was living at the time. They pretty much flipped when they saw it, and they seemed to be just as excited to eat it as they were when they first saw the cake.
Oh, and I love the cat on the corner and the accent pillow. I didn’t have many tools yet and I hadn’t discovered gum paste, so they were made out of fondant. This is still one of my favorite cakes. It was so cute!
This was the very first custom cake that I tried to make. I had never tried to shape a cake into something or use fondant, so that was a huge learning experience. Actually, I learned a crazy amount from just this cake – like dimensions, the thickness fondant should be, coloring fondant, etc.
It may not be the best looking cake, but it was delicious!
